MEDIA RELEASE
24 FEBRUARY 1999
IMMEDIATE
GERMANS TO VISIT QUNU

An international delegation from the Province of Lower Saxony in Germany, led by their provincial Minister for Food, Agriculture and
Forestry, the Honourable Mr. Uwe Bartels, will visit President Mandelas place at Qunu tomorrow at 11 0clock in the morning.

President Mandelas place is known for its tourist attraction potential and the visit will go a long way in ensuring that Germans fall in
love with the place of such historical significance.

They are here to gain information on Agriculture in the Province, link institutions from Lower Saxony with the Eastern Cape, boost
investment in the Province and agree on certain projects and assistance needed.

This relationship is the result of a twinning agreement on technical co-operation that was signed in 1995 between the two Provinces and
this is the second visit by a German delegation to the Province.

Their next stop from Qunu will be Umtata where they will be looking at the assistance they can provide in the establishment of an Umtata
Market, looking specifically at upgrading of Umtata Abattoir.

From there, they will drive to Wild Coast and along the way they will be introduced to various rural community projects like the irrigation
schemes and livestock production projects.

The following day …(26/02/99)

A letter of intent will be signed after a brief lunch to be thrown for the delegation by the Premier on Friday (26/02/99) at the State
House. This letter is expected to be signed between the visiting Minister, the MEC for Agriculture and Land Affairs in the Eastern Cape,
Mr. Max Mamase and other provincial MECs.

You are cordially invited to a media conference to be held at the State House immediately after the signing of the letter of intent at
14H:30. You are however most welcome to join the guest during lunch at 13H:00 Oclock before the signing of the letter of intent.
